TWC: ‘Affordable access to medicines is a fundamental right’

TerryWhite Chemmart (TWC) is leveraging its network of over 600 pharmacies to back the Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s campaign for more affordable medicines.

As frontline healthcare providers, TWC pharmacies see firsthand the impact of rising medication costs, forcing many Australians to choose between essential prescriptions and basic necessities such as food and rent.

Nick Munroe, TWC Executive General Manager, commends the government’s recent efforts to make medications more affordable.

“Last year, the government reduced the co-payment for general patients, a cost-of-living measure that was incredibly well received by patients,” he says.

“However, more can be done as financial pressures continue to be faced by many.”

Mr Munroe further emphasises that in order for pharmacists to achieve better community health outcomes, medications need to be more affordable.

“No one should have to choose between filling a prescription and putting food on the table,” he says.

“That’s why we are supporting this campaign to further ease the cost burden on Australian families.”

Mr Munroe says TWC stands with community pharmacists across Australia in calling on the government to lower the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) co-payment.

This move, he says, will significantly reduce the financial pressure on Australian households and ensure access to necessary healthcare.

Pharmacists are trusted healthcare advisors, and TWC pharmacies play a vital role in supporting patients managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

However, when patients can’t afford their medications, health status declines, contributing to higher hospital admissions and added strain on the healthcare system.

By supporting this campaign, TWC reinforces its commitment to patient care and advocating for policies that prioritise health and wellbeing.

Affordable access to medicines is a fundamental right and TWC will continue to work alongside industry leaders to push for reforms that benefit all Australians.
