Addressing the use of psychotropics in aged care

Pharmacists are invited to join the Australasian College of Pharmacy for its latest webinar update, ‘Psychotropics in aged care’, on Tuesday 4 May at 7pm AEST and 5pm AWST.

On the back of the recent findings from the Royal Commission on Aged Care, the need to address the overuse of antipsychotics and the use of chemical restraint in the elderly is paramount amongst health professionals.

This webinar will provide pharmacists a practical overview of the use of antipsychotics and medicines that may be misused as chemical restraints in the elderly and discuss the role of pharmacists in addressing this critical issue.

The webinar’s key speaker, Nicole Dilworth, is AACP accredited to perform home medication reviews and residential Medication Management Review. Ms Dilworth graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours from the University of Tasmania, where she is currently studying for a Professional Honours in Clinical Pharmacy.

The College’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dimitri Kopanakis says that the topic of the webinar shows the College’s education offering is receptive to the wider healthcare industry and are at the forefront of educating about constructive changes in pharmacy practice.

“We’re pleased to be running a workshop the day before APP on pharmacist’s practicing to their full potential. This workshop will use vital clinical topics as practical examples, including practical approaches to treating patients with chronic health conditions, triptans for migraines, adapalene, cannabidiol, melatonin, Covid-19 vaccinations, and holistic vaccination approaches.”

“The workshop contains a practical session that is underpinned by a complex chronic care case study to explore the prescribing competencies necessary to address harm minimisation, therapy adaptation and deprescribing,” says Dr Kopanakis.

“In addition to the pre-conference workshop, the College is the Official Education Partner of APP2021 on the Gold Coast next month, Australia’s largest pharmacy industry conference and trade exhibition,” says Dr Kopanakis, “We look forward to seeing you online on Tuesday 4 May for the latest aged care update and on Wednesday 19 May for the pre-conference workshop.”

The psychotropics in aged care webinar on 4 May is complimentary to Australasian College of Pharmacy members and $49 for non-members. Pharmacists in both Australia and New Zealand. For more information visit: acp.edu.au.
