DHL adds advanced automation to Sydney healthcare warehouse

DHL Supply Chain Australia (DHL) has installed advanced automation at its pharmaceutical-grade Life Sciences and Healthcare (LSHC) facility in South-West Sydney, backed by a $9million investment.

The upgrade, announced today, supports DHL Group’s Strategy 2030 focus on life sciences and healthcare and expands its DHL Health Logistics network in Australia. The multi-tenant site serves more than 40 customers across pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostics.

What has been installed

“Featuring an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) by Hai Robotics, the automation spans over 3,000 square metres,” says DHL.

The automation includes:

  • 14,700 shelving locations,
  • 14,000 inventory totes serviced by 12 AS/RS bots,
  • 5 Goods-to-Person (GTP) pick stations,
  • 6 dedicated decant and pack stations, and
  • 10 smart dispatch sortation lanes, meeting the needs of 20 existing customers.

‘Using tech to complement human expertise’

DHL Supply Chain Australia & New Zealand CEO Steve Thompsett says the company is “committed to supporting life sciences and healthcare customers”.

“We are deploying proven automation technology where it delivers tangible operational impact for customers and patients,” he says.

“This enhances our capacity, agility, and responsiveness, enabling us to deliver flexible and scalable solutions that meet evolving customer and market demands.”

It’s an investment that “strengthens” their “operational excellence and presents new opportunities” for their workforce, Mr Thompsett says.

“[We’re] using technology to complement human expertise with innovation to deliver reliable outcomes for our customers,” he says,

Sustainability measures

The 36,237-square-metres-facility includes a “1 MWp rooftop solar system with grid electricity consumption matched through locally purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs)”.

Other features include sensor-controlled LED lighting, smart energy metering, high-efficiency HVAC, cool roofing, rainwater harvesting and reuse, water-efficient fixtures and rapid-rise roller doors to limit energy loss.

DHL says the investment complements its network of healthcare facilities across the Asia Pacific region.
