An independent analysis from HTANALYSTS reveals that approximately “730,000 fewer GP consultations will be needed each year, saving women $23 million in out-of-pocket costs, if specially trained pharmacists could undertake consultations for hormonal contraception”.
It also identified $94.5 million in total benefits, including $32.1 million in annual government savings from avoided GP appointments and $29.7 million in workplace productivity gains linked to reduced absenteeism.
A workforce ready to help
National President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Professor Trent Twomey, says the findings show the benefits of better using Australia’s highly trained healthcare workforce.
“Pharmacist prescribing for hormonal contraception makes vital healthcare more accessible,” he says.
“As primary care continues to be under pressure, we need to make the best use of all health professionals.
“Community pharmacists are ideally placed to spend time discussing options, monitoring outcomes and supporting women to make informed decisions in consultation with their broader healthcare team.”
Transforming healthcare access and affordability
The analysis found “consistent pharmacist prescribing rights would position community pharmacy as an accessible entry point for initiation and continuation of hormonal contraception, particularly for underserved populations”.
Professor Twomey says access and affordability must remain a central consideration as governments continue to expand access pathways for contraception.
“Next year, the government’s Women’s Health Trial will begin. The trial will transform the access and affordability of healthcare for women in Australia as the government announced it will support women with the cost if they choose to access their contraception in a pharmacy,” he says.
“If you have a healthcare or concession card, your contraception should cost $7.70, and if you have a Medicare card, no more than $25.
“Pharmacist prescribing, in line with strict clinical protocols, ensures women can access the right healthcare professional at a time that’s right for them.
“This healthcare reform will improve access, maintain affordability and deliver better outcomes for patients.”
