Queenslanders encouraged to take steps for a healthier heart this RedFeb

February marks RedFeb, Heart Research Australia’s annual campaign that raises awareness and encourages Australians to take action against heart disease.

With heart disease remaining the leading cause of death worldwide, it also has a significant impact in Australia.

In 2024, 16,275 Australians died from heart disease.

Every 9 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart event, which amounts to around 157 each day.

Overall, more than 1.3 million Australians live with one or more conditions related to heart, stroke or vascular disease.

Chris Owen, President of Queensland Branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, says, “everyone can take practical steps to reduce their risk and protect their heart”.

“Community pharmacists are the frontline providers for CVD prevention, screening and intervention, and Queenslanders are encouraged to take advantage of support and advice available at their community pharmacy.

“Services such as blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol checks, medication guidance and cardiovascular risk advice can help Queenslanders understand their heart health and take action early,” he says.

Mr Owen notes, “heart disease often develops silently, but small actions every day can make a real difference”.

“Regular exercise, a balanced diet, checking your blood pressure and cholesterol, and knowing your personal health numbers are all ways people can take control of their heart health,” he says.

RedFeb provides a timely reminder that prevention is powerful.

Simple changes, whether walking more, choosing healthier meals, or booking a health check, can have a meaningful impact on heart health and overall well-being.
