Winter booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine welcome

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has expanded the Covid-19 booster rollout, opting to lower its age recommendation for a second booster dose to 50. An extra shot will also be an optional choice for those over 30 years of age.

According to a statement released by ATAGI, adults aged 50 to 64 years are now recommended to receive a winter booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Adults aged 30 to 49 years can receive a winter booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, however, ATAGI says the benefit for people in this age group is less certain.

The Covid-19 booster expansion has been welcomed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), with RACGP Vice President Dr Bruce Willett saying it is “a sensible decision and a positive step forward in the Covid-19 vaccine rollout”.

“I encourage all those eligible to jump aboard and receive their second booster, particularly people over the age of 50. Together we can reduce Covid-19 case numbers and help keep each other safe,” Dr Willett said.

Dr Willett says that with the arrival of winter there is a high community transmission of not only Covid-19 but also the flu and other viruses, which is putting pressure on the health system, so it’s imperative that “we all do our part and do everything we can to protect ourselves and our broader community”.

“By getting your second booster you can also reduce your risk of ending up in a hospital bed and help relieve pressure on the entire health system,” Dr Willett said. “So, please step forward to receive your second booster.”
