SA pharmacies to provide NIP vaccines to community

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (SA Branch) welcomes the SA Government’s decision to include community pharmacy in the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for 2022.

This will provide greater access for eligible South Australians to Commonwealth-funded influenza vaccines.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (SA Branch) has been advocating for community pharmacy’s inclusion in the NIP in SA for a number of years and the decision is recognition of the critical and expanding role that community pharmacy continues to play in healthcare provision of South Australians.

Eligible South Australians will now have greater access to their influenza vaccine.

Nick Panayiaris, SA Branch President and National Senior Vice President, confirms that the great work done by community pharmacies throughout the Covid-19 vaccination program has led to this decision.

“We commend the South Australian Government for taking this action,” he says.

Mr Panayiaris adds it was vital that flu vaccinations be part of everyone’s preparations for the coming flu season.

He says the massive effort underway to vaccinate against Covid-19 strains risked a loss of focus on the dangers of influenza.

Mr Panayiaris says it was logical for community pharmacists to offer the National Immunisation Program flu vaccination service, alongside the normal annual service currently provided by pharmacies.

“Your community pharmacy is easily accessible, often after hours or at weekends. Your pharmacists is a highly-skilled, trained person who can deliver your vaccination quickly and easily,” he adds.
