Delahunty’s Chemist recognised for 90 years of pharmacy service

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland Branch President Chris Owen has thanked and congratulated Delahunty’s Chemist for nine decades of pharmacy service and providing primary healthcare for Queenslanders.

“On behalf of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Guild members, staff and patients who have been cared for by Delahunty’s Chemist, I wish to congratulate Delahunty’s Chemist and the three generations of the Delahunty family for this impressive and deserving milestone,” Mr Owen said.

“Since opening during the challenging depression era, the Delahunty’s Chemist has experienced constant evolution with changes to pharmacist scope, technology innovation, patients as health consumers, and more recently the impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Their 90-year longevity, through ongoing transformation, is a testament to their dedication to patients, community-minded approach, optimistic attitude, and commitment to pharmacist progress and business innovation.

“Thank you does not seem enough to appropriately recognise the contribution the Delahunty family has made to community pharmacy practice and the health and wellbeing of many Queenslanders.”

James (Jas J) Delahunty Senior opened Delahunty’s Chemist on 13 July 1932 in Brisbane’s CBD.

Since then, Delahunty’s Chemist has been a Brisbane icon and synonymous with healthy living.

Jas J was a well-respected and knowledgeable Queensland Guild Branch Committee Member for many years and was awarded Life Membership of the Guild in 1969.

James Junior knew from an early age that he would follow in his father’s footsteps.

He became a community pharmacist after completing his Bachelor’s degree in 1969 and worked in Delahunty’s Chemist.

He affectionately became known as The EKKA Chemist after constructing a pharmacy stand at the Royal Queensland Show to connect with the thousands of Queenslanders attending – and he did so for 21 years!

James Jnr met Carmel, a fellow pharmacist, and together they led the next generation of Delahunty’s Chemist.

Bridget is one of four children of James Jnr and Carmel and the third-generation pharmacist in the Delahunty family.

In addition to the family history, her interest in pharmacy comes from wanting to care for the people around her and keep them healthy.

She has now moved into the medical artificial intelligence space as a Technical Writer for RxMx.

“Delahunty’s Pharmacy is in good company with the likes of ABC and RM Williams also celebrating the 90-year milestone this year and shows the type of fortitude required to be a long-standing service,” Mr Owen said.

“I have no doubt that the Delahunty family will achieve 100 years of pharmacy service and contribute even further to the community pharmacy industry and Queenslanders’ wellbeing,” Mr Owen said.
