Bariatric surgery helps nearly half of patients off type 2 diabetes treatment within a year

48.8% of patients with type 2 diabetes and morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery were able to discontinue their diabetes treatment in the year after surgery, in a study in Queensland.

Australian researchers looked at the health outcomes of about 200 people in the year after their surgery, and say the average patient lost 23.6% of their body weight relative to before the surgery.

The researchers say quality of life increased by 18.8%, with health problems including high blood pressure and fatty liver disease reducing and eating habits improving among the group.
