Cardiologist highlights importance of nutrients in mitochondrial health

At the four-day Australian Pharmacy Professional (APP) conference and Trade exhibition, Australia’s Leading Integrative Cardiologist Dr Ross Walker will address attendees on day three about the effects of COVID on cell mitochondrial dysfunction and the importance of ubiquinol in reversing negative health impacts.

Ubiquinol is the active, more bioavailable form of coenzyme Q10 that is essential for energy production in the mitochondria of cells. Mitochondria have an essential role in cellular homeostasis of all body systems, and ubiquinol is concentrated in organs that require the most energy, such as the heart, liver, intestines, muscles and kidneys, as well as involved in regulating both innate and adaptive immunity.1

Dr Walker’s half hour session for pharmacists will outline the pivotal role ubiquinol plays in supporting the cardiac manifestations that may be caused as a result of both COVID and Long-COVID.

A review, published December 2022, of 884 studies of 883,627 participants, found micronutrients (including omega-3, magnesium, vitamin D, alpha-lipoic acid and ubiquinol) may promote and maintain cardiovascular health.2

While research published in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences in October last year found ubiquinol, given at 100 mg twice a day for 30 days in patients post-COVID accelerated regeneration of mitochondrial health, and improved pulmonary function and other post COVID-related symptoms.3

Dr Walker says “COVID is a serious systemic disease in certain people that requires early assessment and integrative strategies for the best outcome, and it is key to support mitochondrial function.”

“As health practitioners, we can assist patients with the many symptoms that are related to mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced energy production with a number of interventions, including supplementation of nutritional compounds which support immune function.”

MORE ABOUT LONG-COVID

Long-COVID, also known as post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), refers to a variety of multi-organ symptoms that persist for over 12 weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection. It can impact all ages, including children, and the onset and time course of symptoms differ across individuals and by symptom type.4

More than 200 symptoms have been identified impacting multiple organ systems, including brain, heart, blood vessels, lungs, gastrointestinal and reproductive, and these can last for years.4 Fatigue and shortness of breath are the most frequently reported profound and persistent symptoms.5

COVID has the capability to damage many organ systems, damage that has been demonstrated across diverse tissues has predominantly been attributed to immune-mediated response and inflammation, rather than direct infection of cells by the virus.4
