GI issues help for seniors

Seniors with gastrointestinal (GI) issues can now order prescription medication and OTC medicines via Tonic, an app that may make it simpler for those with chronic gut illness to relieve symptoms and return to full health.

Tonic co-founders Adam Gilmore and Guy McKenzie told Retail Pharmacy they wanted to make it easier for seniors to get the products they need without having to leave home.

“Tonic has been popular with all age groups, but seniors in particular have responded positively to the app because we know they’re the ones most often having to venture to a pharmacy to get scripts filled,” Mr Gilmore said.

“Pharmacy Guild of Australia stats show 43 per cent of medicine users aged older than 50 take five or more medicines, which is why we’ve designed the app so seniors can order multiple products at the same time.

“Seniors with gastrointestinal diseases may feel uncomfortable discussing symptoms such as nausea and constipation in a busy pharmacy.

“To remove this embarrassment, a pharmacist calls the Tonic user directly once they’ve ordered a product, to discuss how to take the medication, and any risks or side effects.

“We also deliver at a time that suits the user.”
