Is Yoga an effective treatment for anxiety?

While the mental health benefits of yoga are known, a new randomised clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry looking at the efficacy of yoga compared with other first-line therapies has found positive results for the ancient practice.

A total of 226 adults who were suffering from generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) took part in the study, which found that, in terms of treatment for GAD, yoga was more effective than stress education, but not as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

The authors concluded that, while yoga was “efficacious for GAD … the results support CBT remaining first-line treatment”.
