Mask-wearing trends revealed

Despite health officials detailing the protective benefits of face masks, particular where social distancing is not possible, recent research released by Finder reveals that a number of Australians continue to avoid wearing a mask.

Reportedly, Finder surveyed 1,000 respondents and found that 15% of those not living in Victoria (where face masks are mandatory) say they won’t wear face masks as a way to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

On a more positive note, Finder data also reveals that 97% of Victorians are compliant with wearing face masks in public since the mandate.

Further results show that while face masks aren’t compulsory outside of Victoria, 8% of non-Victorians reportedly say they are already wearing masks in public as an extra way of protecting themselves against the virus.

“The stigmatisation of mask-wearing has changed drastically over the past few months, as many Australians have accepted that we can all help to stop the spread of Covid-19,” says Managing Editor at Finder, Kate Browne.

“Coronavirus is unpredictable. Just because you’re living in a state that’s yet to experience a second wave doesn’t mean you should let you guard down when it comes to hygiene and social distancing.

“Most Aussies are taking the threat of the pandemic seriously and acknowledge that wearing masks is an important component of containing the outbreak.”

Keeping up with demand

While the results on mask wearing have been mixed, the second wave in Victoria and NSW has raised concerns that suppliers may not be able to meet rising face mask demand.

However, results from Finder suggest a mask shortage is unlikely with the four major mask suppliers downplaying concerns over long-term shortages.

“Most have ramped up their manufacturing and distributions and aren’t worried about running low,” says Ms Browne.

“If you’re struggling to find a mask at your local shops, head online. There are a number of online stores working hard to restock reusable face masks to keep with demand.”
