New lead appointed at Amcal and Guardian Pharmacies

Long-term pharmacist and Sigma Healthcare’s Head of Franchise Brands, David Preston, will now also assume the leadership of Amcal and Guardian pharmacies.

Mr Preston has been working with retail franchise brands at Sigma for six years but has been involved in the industry for 30 years, including being a pharmacy owner for 25 years.

He operates one of Amcal’s largest pharmacies in East Gippsland, Victoria, a regional area, which was heavily impacted by the 2020 bushfires.

AGNC Chairman Marc Clavin says the appointment of Mr Preston will ensure there is continued experienced leadership at an important time for the Amcal and Guardian brands.

“David’s passion and understanding of the industry is what stands him apart. I’m sure all Amcal and Guardian owners will welcome him to his new role. David knows what it means to run a pharmacy and what it takes to support franchisees to grow their businesses,’’ he says.

Mr Preston says he is both excited and humbled by the appointment.

“It’s a privilege to take on the role leading Amcal and Guardian given their incredible heritage and status amongst the most trusted brands in Australia’s pharmacy retail sector,’’ he says.

“I can remember as a child going into an Amcal pharmacy, then known as Allied Master Chemists of Australia, and being amazed at the level of professional care.

“That’s become even more important in today’s environment where pharmacies have become the cornerstone of healthcare in many towns, as I experienced first-hand during the bushfires and the pandemic.

“I’m really excited about the future of Sigma’s brands and I’m especially looking forward to meeting as many Amcal and Guardian franchise partners and team members at the Amcal and Guardian Conference on the Gold Coast from 9-11 October.

“After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, it will be amazing to get back together in person, engage with each other and share more about our future vision for the brands.”

The Amcal and Guardian Conference will also recognise the champions of the brands at the annual awards ceremony.

Mr Preston takes on his new role following the resignation announced on Monday of Kurt O’Brien, who is moving to take on new opportunities outside of the pharmacy industry.
