Qld pharmacies delivering free flu vax from 1 March

Queenslanders now have access to free flu vaccinations available through community pharmacies, with the state’s program having commenced on 1 March.

Announced by the Crisafulli Government in January this year, the initiative is expected to ease pressure on hospital emergency departments by increasing vaccination rates ahead of the flu season.

‘The difference between life and death’

Chris Owen, Queensland Branch President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, emphasises the program’s life-saving potential.

“This program has the potential to be the difference between life and death for Queenslanders,” he says.

“The Crisafulli Government and Minister for Health, Tim Nicholls, should be applauded for their continued support for free flu vaccines for Queenslanders.

“It is a significant investment in the health of all Queenslanders as it funds the vaccination for those not otherwise eligible under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).

“Everyone aged 6 months and over is recommended to receive an annual influenza vaccine, and getting the vaccine doesn’t only benefit those who receive it directly, it also helps prevent the spread of the disease to other loved ones, in
particular, elderly relatives and our youngest children under five years of age, who are most susceptible to having more serious infections due to influenza exposure.”

‘Queenslanders should act now’

With the flu season typically running from May to September, Mr Owen urges Queenslanders to act now.

“I’d encourage Queenslanders not to wait until the influenza season begins,” he says.

“It often takes a few weeks for our bodies to get the full benefit from the vaccine, and it will be at its maximum effectiveness for three to four months.”

Queenslanders can book their free flu vaccination at their local community pharmacy or visit findapharmacy.com.au.

“The more people who get vaccinated, the fewer hospitalisations will result due to influenza,” says Mr Owen.
