Effective from 1 July, Queenslanders will gain permanent access to treatment for acute everyday health conditions through their local community pharmacies, which are currently permitted under the Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot.
The announcement was made by Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Hon. Tim Nicholls MP, during his keynote address at the Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference & Trade Exhibition (APP2025).
‘Better health outcomes for more patients’
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Acting President, Cate Whalan, says the announcement is great news for patients and will provide greater certainty for community pharmacists to offer these expanded services.
“Making treatment for these acute and everyday conditions, such as eczema, ear infections, travel health and school scores (impetigo) permanently available through community pharmacy will offer Queensland patients more choice in where they are able to access quick and safe health care services,” says Ms Whalan.
“This improved access and choice will lead to better health outcomes for more patients and demonstrate that acute care provided by community pharmacists is a sustainable solution for a healthier Queensland.”
From 1 July pharmacists will now be authorised to treat conditions including minor wounds, allergic rhinitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux, mild acne, smoking cessation, and travel health.
