Vic Government commits $18M to expand pharmacist scope

The Victorian Government has announced an $18 million investment to make the Victorian Community Pharmacist Statewide Pilot (the Pilot) permanent and expand the conditions pharmacists can treat patients for in Victoria.

Announced as part of the 2025-26 Budget, the expansion of healthcare services available in community pharmacies will include treatment for 22 everyday health conditions, including asthma, nausea, ear infections, wound management and type 2 diabetes.

This expansion builds on the initial Pilot services providing treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections
(UTIs), resupply of oral contraceptives, treatment for shingles and the flare up of mild plaque psoriasis, and travel health vaccinations.

The state government will fund pharmacist consultation fees for the expanded program, so patients will be able to access the care they need without an out-of-pocket cost.

This commitment makes Victoria the only State or Territory where there is no out-of-pocket cost for patients to visit a community pharmacy for a consultation for these expanded healthcare services.

‘A smart, modern reform’

“This is a smart, modern reform that puts patients first,” says George Tambassis, President of The Guild’s Victoria Branch.

“This announcement empowers community pharmacists to do even more for patients and that’s a win for every Victorian.”

Congratulating the Government, the Guild says today’s announcement brings Victoria in line with other Australian states and territories and is a major step toward modernising primary healthcare delivery.

“Victorians have told us they want easier access to healthcare. The Government has listened, and
delivered,” says Mr Tambassis.

“This is what modern healthcare looks like – local, efficient and built on collaboration.”

‘Health equity at front and centre’

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) Victorian President Dr Amy Page FPS says the move represents significant progress towards realising the full potential of pharmacists after similar recent announcements in other states.

“I commend the government for placing health equity front and centre in the program design,” says Dr Page.

“Unlike other states, Victorians will have access to consultations with pharmacist without an out-of-pocket consultation fee, which is so important in helping people in vulnerable priority populations to access care.

“There should be no wrong doors to our health system; clearly defined referral pathways will mean all consumers to seek to access these services are triaged and directed to the appropriate level of care for their needs.”

Both the Guild and the PSA have said they look forward to closely working with the state’s Department of Health and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth and effective rollout of the investment.
